Gloom Surface

In Gloom Surface, Thai artist Wuthipol Ujathammarat composed a series of semi-abstract photographs from his impromptu travel through neighbourhoods of Tokyo, in a work that strangely inspired by a typical Japanese summer gloom. It documents a sensibly glaring and saturated surface of the metropolitan where its urban palettes, otherwise subtle and delicate, vibrantly emerge against a polishing, soaked and overcast surrounding.

In pursuit of eerie urban observations amongst a showery and lowlight atmosphere, the artist chooses to absorb a compact and orderly scattering of urban harmony, and draws attention to the popping pantone gloss glazed by the drizzles. The captivating visual clarity, varnished by the gloom, encourages his awareness to playfully observe the dimensional layers of urban palettes; when a harsh distraction from shades and shadows, fashioned by the sunlight, is absent.

Precisely framed with a strong visual expression and composition, it creates an unforeseen artistic radiance of urban surfaces that creatively gifts Tokyo with a colourful gloomy aesthetic flavour.
